During the second day of the debate on the State of the Nation, Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero managed to avoid getting into any sort of debate with Mariano Rajoy, the leader of the conservative Partido Popular.
Mr. Rajoy, who added that the failure to debate was not the result of a prior agreement, also avoided this.
Meanwhile, Patxi Lopez, the head of the Basque Socialists, announced that he was intending to have a meeting with representatives of the illegalized pro- Eta Batasuna Party despite the Basque terror group failing to abandon the armed struggle, and the Prime Minister stated that he ‘would not prevent this as the political dialogue is starting’.
In a later comment PP Secretary General Angel Acebes stated that on April 17, the Prime Minister stated that ‘first there would be peace and then dialogue’ whereas he was undertaking exactly the opposite, as many political analysts expressed the belief yesterday that the Prime Minister has put freedom and liberty effectively up for sale.
