The origin of this festival dates from the era of Jaime the 1st, the Conqueror, who, on the 18th of August of 1250, gave the town the privilege of being able to hold an annual market and festival. Since then, more than 750 years have passed but this historically important event has been celebrated every year without exception. The Fira dAgost in Xątiva, whose beginning coincides with the celebrations for the Assumption of the Virgin, is currently one of the oldest existing festivals in Spain and has been declared to be of National Tourist Interest. This festival was originally a market and exchange of agricultural implements and animals, although it did incorporate other activities. It later grew in size and the market currently occupies an area of 5,000 square metres filled with vendors of livestock, agricultural produce, commerce and tools. Also during the festival are bullfights, competitions of strength, firework displays, Valencian dances, theatre, singing, etc.
